Provenance: Presumably the family of Anne, Countess of Northampton (d. 1763) and her husband Charles Compton, 7th Earl of Northampton (1737-1763); probably to their daughter, Lady Elizabeth Compton (1760-1835), married 1782 Lord George Cavendish, First Earl of Burlington (1754-1834); by descent in the Cavendish family to William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire (1858-1891), Compton Place, Eastbourne; by descent to Andrew Cavendish, 11th Duke of Devonshire (1920-2004)(who rented out Compton Place in 1954 when faced with 80% death duties on his father’s estate and sold the pastel at that same time), Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement; Compton Place, Eastbourne, Edgar Horn, 18-20.v.1954, Lot 796; to a New York family by the mid or late 20th century; then by descent; 2013 via David Tunick, Inc., New York to Private Collection.
